Oakhurst
in the heart of City of Decatur one of Intown Atlanta's most charming "family friendly" 'hoods
Arguably one of the City's most sought after neighborhood, Oakhhurst is well known for it's wide selection of original craftsman style homes and larger reproductions. It's seen more than it's fair share of growth due to the popular public school system and, though we don't know the exact numbers, there's an expoential increase in the population of dog walkers and baby strollers every year.

Ranging from quaint shops, a true neighborhood market, an art gallery, children's music school and hair salon... to medical and real estate services, a 50's style car care center and nearly a dozen eateries and frequented watering holes. It's all anchored by a community and events center located in the completely restored, old Scottish -Rite Children's Hospital. The original Neil Reid Design dates back to 1919. Theres even a brand new fire house where friendly fireman are often found chatting with neighbors while buffing to a shine Decatur's new fleet of all white fire engines. History
A bicycle or vespa scooter would be appropriate touring fair of this community originally established in in 1892 in conjunction with The Atlanta Street Railway Companies development of the North Decatur Trolly Line. This line crossed the South Decatur line right at the intersection in what is now Oakhurst Village. Oakhurst was incorporated by the Georgia Legislature in 1910 and remained the town of Oakhurst until it's full annexation into the City of Decatur by 1916.
For decades a national trend of city abandonment and suburban sprawl led to the steep decline of the area from the 1960's to the early 1990's. Much like many of Atlanta's in-town neighborhoods, it wasn't until the resurgence of desired city living in conjunction with local growth spawned by the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996, did Oakhurst experience change once again. Since the late 90's its growth to maturity has accelerated as it furthers its development of a character all it's own.
Predominately a residential community, Oakhurst has no shortage of city parks and places of worship. Harmony Park in the center of the Village Square and Oakhurst and McCoy Parks are all within easy reach and offer world class amenities like a new community swimming pool, a 9+ acre recreation park with tennis courts, baseball fields, a skate park, children's play grounds and picnic areas. Theres even and a large dog park where you and the dog can meet the neighbors and play.
While visiting Kavarna, Oakhurst Village's token coffee and music pub, it's not long before you notice that everyone there is uniquely different. Ladies with baby strollers, tattooed musicians, suite-tied attorneys and retirees with there dogs can all be found on a typical morning- collecting a cup of their treasured morning joe. It's a community whose residents are as diverse as the homes they live in- old and new- young and mature- polished and ragged. Oakhurst is one of those places where humanity shows up in all it's glory. And this... well, this is what make it's so special to the eclectic 6,000 or so folks who choose to call it home.
