Kirkwood Atlanta Real Estate
Kirkwood is one of Atlanta's well known "close-in" neighborhoods- an extremely tight-knit community, and is home to the Kirkwood Neighbors Association, an active community group focused on the betterment of the area. Located about 4 miles due East of the downtown and steeped in a rich history of the City of Atlanta it's no wonder that it led the pack of transitioning City of Atlanta neighborhoods near the turn of the century . Having been the battle ground of the American Civil War, home at times to mayors of Atlanta, governors, generals and affluent Atlantans over the years- it's earned it's reputation as an Atlanta original.

It goes without saying that it's location gives it a head start but it's the variety of affordable homes and a large variety of architecture (lots of crafstman bungalows, victorian's and cottages) that has made it so popular to young urban professionals, artists, musicians and newly hitched couples excited about finding a place to call their own in this close-in city-suburb.
Before the Civil War, much of property in the area was owned by two families- the KirkPatrick family and the Dunwoody family. The name Kirkwood comes from the blending of the two family names. Kirkwood holds a very interesting designation- that of the location of the "first shots fired" in the Historic "Battle of Atlanta". There are many Markers in the Kirkwood area that tell the stories and locations of Civil War Battles. Among them are "McPherson's Last Ride" at the north intersections of Memorial Drive and Clay Street, "Unexpected Clash" at the intersection of Memorial and Clifton and "Battle of Atlanta Began Here" at Memorial Drive and Clay Street- the battle that lead to the burning of Atlanta in 1864 by Sherman's troops.
The area was significantly developed to it's current residential state in the 1920's and 30's and was an early streetcar suburb of Atlanta. Like most of Atlanta's in-town communities it experienced steep decline up until the early 1990's when investors and urban pioneers starting buying and renovating the adorable historic homes in the area. The last decade brought significant community transition as renovations and restorations skyrocketed. The area was cleaned-up, crime rates fell and the area had a resurgence- new life, a new vigor was brought to Kirkwood.
The redevelopment of the downtown Kirkwood area along Hosea Williams (formally Boulevard), at Oakview, has meant a ton for the areas appeal. There are coffee houses, multiple unique dining options, and even a neighborhood "feed and seed" now open in the thriving village. Community festivals and events like the Kirkwood Spring Fling and the Kirkwood Wine Stroll continue to grow in popularity and only add to Kirkwood's modern city living appeal.
