If you should ever ask a native of Atlanta to describe and list neighborhoods
that are quintessentially "Atlantean," it is likely that Grant Park
would be on their list. This area is one of the oldest and most historically
significant areas in Georgia, and figured largely in the American Civil War.
Grant Park is the setting for "The Cyclorama," a 360 degree piece
of artwork detailing the battle of Atlanta in 1864. A main figure in the years
following the war was Col. Lamuel P. Grant, who originally donated the 100
acres of land which would become Grant Park. Atlanta then purchased an additional
44 acres from Grant, and contracted the Olmstead Brothers to develop the
area.
