Cabbagetown Real Estate
Situated just east of downtown Atlanta, Cabbagetown is a historic community,
originally founded to support the Fulton Bag & Cotton Mill. It was the
presence of the mill which formed the backbone of this community until its
closing in 1977. Cabbagetown began as a series of one story homes built by
Jacob Elsas, the mill owner, to house the workers who drew their living from his enterprise.
Cabbagetown Atlanta Real Estate
Cabbagetown Atlanta real estate has grown exponentially since its humble beginnings. For years, this town has been known as Atlanta's oldest industrial settlement, and many of the original homes are still standing on Cabbagetown's historic streets. This town possesses a flavor that is distinctly southern, and definitively Georgian.
There are numerous theories to explain how Cabbagetown got its interesting name. One theory is that the aroma of cooking cabbage was easily recognizable in the air during the mill days and the moniker was placed on the town by visitors. Another possible explanation recalls the same period when a train or truck carrying cabbages was overturned, providing the residents with a week of healthy meals.
